Day 1
Arrive in Sarria (440m) and overnight.
Sarria is a paradise for art lovers – discover old pieces and learn first-hand about art restoration. Wander along the river to reach the O Chanto area and take a dip in its pools. Visit the Convento de la Magdalena Monastery. Then relax with a cool drink and views of the Sarria River from your hotel terrace
Day 2
Sarria to Portomarin (350m) 22kms
Your first day’s walk is an enjoyable one in shady oak woods via pretty villages set along quiet country roads. Visit the beautiful Romanesque church in Barbadelo and the lovely hamlet of Ferreiros. Descend to the River Mino to find Portomarin with its imposing fortress. Relax on one of many terraces in the main plaza.
Day 3
Portomarin to Palas De Rei (595m) 24kms
Cross the River Mino and climb steadily uphill towards the Serra de Ligonde. Pass through the charming stone villages of Ligonde, Lestedo and Eirexe to reach your stop for the night, Palas de Rei.
Day 4
Palas De Rei to Melide 14kms
Continue slightly downhill today passing through the village of Casanova and the charming village of Leboreiro. Cross the medieval bridge into Melide and take time to enjoy some local specialities in one of its many restaurants.
Day 5
Melide to Arzua 14kms
Follow forested trails and cross several streams to reach the beautiful medieval enclave of Ribadiso, before ascending into Arzua, renowned for its cheese.
Day 6
Arzua to Rua/Pedrouzo 18kms
Head downhill via shady woods, across streams and through sleepy villages. Visit the chapel of Santa Irene with its famous statue of Santiago before descending into the pretty town of Rua.
Day 7
Rua/Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela 21kms
Ascend and descend into Lavacolla where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river before reaching Santiago. On reaching Monte del Gozo you will finally see your goal – the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago! Descend into this UNESCO World Heritage Site and soak up the architecture and wonderful atmosphere in this cultural and spiritual mecca.
Day 8
Arrangements end after breakfast.
We do recommend you spend at least one extra night in Santiago de Compostela, and/or enjoy a day tour to Fisterra – the “end of the world”!.
