Day 1
Arrive in the beautiful border town of Tui and overnight. Collect your Pilgrims Passport from the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tui. If you have time walk across the International Bridge over the River Minho separating Spain from Portugal.
Day 2
Tui to O Porrino, 17km
Your Camino starts on the banks of the Minho River strolling the historic streets of Tui. You then cross through the Das Monxas Tunnel, a steep hill to the San Telmo Bridge, known as the Bridge of Fevers then descend into O Porrino. 3.00pm Transfer back to your accommodation in Tui for the night.
Day 3
O Porrino to Arcade, 23kms
8.30am Transfer back to O Porrino to continue your Pilgrimage through the Louro Valley to Redoneala, where a short, steep climb is rewarded with amazing coastal views. Continue on through pine forests to Setefontes and finally the town of Arcade, renowned for its oysters.
Day 4
Arcade to Pontevedra, 12kms
A short day and a stunning pathway. Follow the ancient cobblestone paths over the Verdugo River to A Canicouva. Explore the impressive old town of Pontevedra with its charming squares narrow streets and numerous tapas bars.
Day 5
Pontevedra to Caldas De Reis, 21kms
Today’s Camino takes you through chestnut, pine and eucalyptus forests. Don’t miss seeing the rectory of Santa Maria de Alba in the village of Ponte Cabras. Further on see a statue of St James with his walking sticking showing pilgrims the way. Pass through the small hamlet of Tivo with its famed fountain and public washhouse. The spa town of Caldas de Reis has been renowned since Roman times for its hot springs – perfect for reviving tired feet.
Day 6
Caldas De Reis to Padron, 17kms
Cross the River Umia then it’s a gentle climb through woods to the village of Santa Marina. You’ll see many churches and stone crosses on the way to Padron, believed to be where St James body arrived when it was bought to Santiago de Compostela by boat.
Day 7
Padron to Santiago de Compostela, 26kms
Pass through small towns to reach the historic sanctuary of A Esclavitude. From Agros dos Monteiros your final destination is in view – the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Enjoy this lively and vibrant city listed as a World Heritage UNESCO site.
Day 8
Arrangements end after breakfast. We do recommend an extra night in Santiago de Compostela. We can also arrange a day trip to Fisterre – the “end of the world”. And don’t forget to factor in the time to get your ‘Compostela’ (Pilgrim Passport) certified!
