Arrival in St Jean Pied de Port (200m) right on the border between France and Spain.
And what a start with the spectacular landscapes, Pyrenees in your sights and cobbled streets beneath your feet.
 
Day 2
St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles (960 m) 24 km
The toughest section of the whole Camino as you cross the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles... If the climb is too daunting don't let it stop you - we have alternative options.  
 
Day 3
Roncesvalles (960 m)-Akerreta (555 m) 27 km
From Roncesvalles, make your way through the tiny towns of Berguete and Espinal to the top of Mezkiriz, before descending through beech and oak woods beside the River Arga to the small village of Akerreta  
 
Day 4
Akerreta (550 m)-Pamplona (449 m) 16 km
Departing Akerreta enjoy the shady paths alongside the River Arga before hitting the busy roads into Pamplona. What a contrast this busy city offers to the peace of the Camino. Its medieval streets are famed for the annual Running of the Bulls festival, San Fermin.  
 
Day 5
Pamplona (449 m)-Puente la Reina (347 m) 23 km
Stride out on suburban roads for the first 5km before entering countryside punctuated with the beautiful churches of Cizur, the sanctuary of San Andrés and the Gambellacos fountain. Then down through the Arga valley to Puente la Reina.  
 
Day 6
Puente la Reina (347 m)-Estella (465 m) 22 km
Cross the Romanesque bridge over the Arga and continue through rolling farmland and vineyards, up three steep hills to hilltop villages and along a Roman road, before descending into Estella.  
 
Day 7
Estella (465 m)-Los Arcos (444 m) 20 km
This is a lovely day's walking along beautiful natural paths, starting with the first section up to Monjardin. In Ayegui pause for a while at the famous Fuente del Vino and the Irache Monastery. Then onto Los Arcos with its 3 pilgrim hospitals from the Middle Ages.  
 
Day 8
Los Arcos (444 m)-Logroño (390 m) 28 km
Your final day of Stage 1 is a long one (talk to us if you'd like to split it into two days). It contains some short, steep sections however there are compensations - you pass through the renowned wine region of La Rioja. A glass or two with dinner should help ease any discomfort.

Arrive in Logrono (390m) and overnight (or rest day if you have completed Stage 1)
 
Day 2
Logrono to Najera (555m) 26 km
Leave Logrono and its historic old quarter and enjoy a fairly easy walk passing through the old pilgrims' gate ' Puerta del Camino' and into the vineyards of the La Rioja region. Take a break in the 12th century town Navarrete before continuing on to enjoy the panoramic views in the medieval region of Najera.  
 
Day 3
Najera to Santo Domingo De La Calzada (639m) 21 kms
Today's walk is shorter with great views. Follow country roads through the Cantabrian mountain range in the north, and the La Demanda mountain range in the south. Arrive in the historic town of Santo Domingo De La Calzada and learn about the legend of the rooster!  
 
Day 4
Santo Domingo De La Calzada to Belorado (770m) 22kms
A mixed landscape today with wooded oak areas, fields of crops and small streams, with a glimpse of the Oca Mountain Range on the horizon. En route visit the Altarpiece in the 16th century church of San Juan Bautista in the town of Granon. Arrive in Belorado and relax in its lovely main square  
 
Day 5
Belorado to San Juan De Ortega (950m) 24kms
Follow peaceful trails and paths through fragrant forests of oaks and pine as you ascend to the little town of Villafranca Montes de Oca. Be sure to visit the Gothic Mausoleum in San Juan De Ortega.  
 
Day 6
San Juan De Ortega to Burgos (860m) 26kms
Today enjoy the peacefulness of the mountains and magnificent views of the entire region of Burgos. Be sure to see the UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric caves in Atapuerca, then make your way down into the valley of the Pico River and the city of Burgos, famous for its magnificent Gothic cathedral.

Day 1
Arrive in Burgos (860m) and overnight (or rest day if you are carrying on your Camino)  
 
Day 2
Burgos to Hornillos Del Camino (849m) 19 kms
Leave Burgos along the Arlanzon River and pass through fields of crops, small patches of Holm oak and conifers that once made up one of the largest forests in Europe. Pass through several small towns before arriving at the tiny medieval town of Hornillos Del Camino.  Transfer to Isar for overnight.
 
Day 3
Hornillos Del Camino  to Castrojeriz  19 kms
Transfer to Hornillos Del Camino to begin a pleasant day walking peaceful farmland and wheatfields, gradually ascending up a plateau, then down into the River Bol valley. You'll pass the Convent of San Anton before arriving in the beautiful town of Castrojeriz with its 9th century castle perched on the hill.  
 
Day 4
Castrojeriz to Fromista (780m) 25kms
Today is your last day in the Burgos region. Climb to the highest point of the plateau, the Alto Mosterales. Cross the River Pisuerga and arrive in the province of Palencia and the plains of Tierra de Campos. Enter the historic town of Fromista along the Canal de Castilla.  
 
Day 5
Fromista to Carrion De Los Condes (830m) 19kms
Follow the trail along the shady banks of the River Uciesa to Villalcazar de Sirga and rest awhile in the town's beautiful church. Then on to Carrion de los Condes with its impressive San Zoilo Monastery.  
 
Day 6
Carrion De Los Condes to Calzadilla De La Cueza (860m) 16kms
A short Camino today following the ancient Roman road 'Via Aquitana', through countryside, pockets of woods and crossing irrigation channels.  
 
Day 7
Calzadilla De La Cueza to Sahagun (829m) 22kms
Expect some climbs today as you cross small valleys via wooded areas to the River Valderaduey. Arrive in the province of Leon and the interesting town of Sahagun known for its Church of San Lorenzo.  
 
Day 8
Sahagun to El Burgo Ranero (878m) 18kms
Cross the Cea River and reach Calzada del Coto where you take the left fork through Bercianos del Camino to reach El Burgo Ranero. Today's landscape is farmland with cereal and grain crops.  Transfer to Sahagun for overnight.
 
Day 9
El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla De Las Mulas (799m) 19km
Transfer to El Burgo Ranero  to begin todays easy walk. You'll pass through the pretty village of Reliegos whilst following the Via Trajana, another Camino that originates in Bordeaux.  
 
Day 10
Mansilla De Las Mulas to Leon (823m) 18kms
Continue on through farmland and take in the view of the lovely city of Leon from the Portillo Hill. Descend into the historic centre of Leon which is well preserved and dominated by its majestic Cathedral.

Day 1
Arrive in Leon (823m) and overnight (or enjoy a day in Leon if you are carrying on your Camino. The architecture is magnificent and be sure to sample the tapas in the Barrio Humedo)
 
Day 2
Leon to Villar De Mazarife (869m) 21kms
Make your way out of the city of Leon through urban areas to reach cropping farmland, orchards and small towns. Today's walk is on almost flat terrain.  
 
Day 3
Villar De Mazarife to Astorga (873m) 32kms
It's a lovely hike today - along picturesque paths and dirt trails to one of the prettiest villages on the Camino - Hospital de Orbigo. Cross its famous bridge, Puente de Orbigo, and continue on to your overnight stop, the walled town of Astorga. A must-see is Gaudi's Episcopal Palace and a must-try is Astorga's exquisite chocolate.  
 
Day 4
Astorga to Rabanal Del Camino (1.140m) 20kms
Make your way up (total ascent 300m) to Rabanal Del Camino through the foothills of the Leon Mountain range. The vegetation is lush, with the path surrounded by oaks, heather, broom and conifer.
 
Day 5
Rabanal Del Camino to Molinaseca (620m) 25kms
A tough but rewarding climb takes you 1500m above sea level and the highest point on the Camino. Leave an offering at the Iron Cross (Cruz de Ferro) atop Mt Iragos and visit St James Chapel. The steep descent to Molinaseca is via the delightful village of El Acebo.  
 
Day 6
Molinaseca to Villafranca Del Bierzo (511m) 31kms
Today cross the region of Bierzo, a plain nestled within a ring of mountains where the micro climate produces the most delicious fruit and vegetables crops. Pass through Ponferrada with its impressive 12th century Templars Castle to arrive at historic Villafranca del Bierzo.  
 
Day 7
Villafranca Del Bierzo to Herrerias De Valcarce (702m) 21kms
Leave the vineyards behind and walk along the Valcace River through leafy valleys and small villages to reach Herrerias De Valcarce. Recharge ready for your ascent into O Cebreiro tomorrow.  
 
Day 8
Herrerias De Valcarce to O Cebreiro (1.330m) 9kms
Tackle the climb up the rocky path into O Cebreiro with an ascent of 626m, a magical place to conclude todays efforts!

Day 1
Arrive in O Cebreiro ((1.330m) and overnight (or take advantage of a rest day if you are carrying on the last stage of your pilgrimage)  
 
Day 2
O Cebreiro to Triacastela (665m) 21kms
Walk the Serra de Ranadoiro (Ranadoiro Mountains) to the iconic pilgrim statue and exhilarating views of Alto do Poio. Descend into the valley between oak and walnut groves to the village of Triacastela.  
 
Day 3
Triacastela to Sarria (440m) 17kms
Follow the Camion Real through tiny villages, along forested and paved routes and into Sarria. The Church stipulates Sarria is the last starting point of the Camino Frances if you wish to receive "La Compostela" - The Pilgrims Official Stamp!  
 
Day 4
Sarria to Portomarin (350m) 22kms
A enjoyable walk today in shady oak woods via pretty villages set along quiet country roads. Visit the beautiful Romanesque church in Barbadelo and the lovely hamlet of Ferreiros. Descend to the River Mino to find Portomarin with its imposing fortress. Relax on one of many terraces in the main plaza.  
 
Day 5
Portomarin to Palas De Rei (595m) 24kms  
Cross the River Mino and climb steadily uphill towards Serra De Ligonde.  Pass through charming stone villages to then reach your overnight stop.
 
Day 6
Palas De Rei to Arzua (454m) 29kms
Continue slightly downhill passing through the village of Casanova and the charming village of Leboreiro. Cross the medieval bridge into Melide and enjoy some local specialities in one of its many restaurants.   Follow forested trails and cross several streams to arrive at the beautiful medieval enclave of Ribadiso, on the banks of the Iso River. Ascend into Arzua, renowned for its cheese.  
 
Day 7
Arzua to Rua (317m) 19kms
Heading downhill via shady woods, across streams and through sleepy villages, the countdown is on. Visit the chapel of Santa Irene with its famous statue of Santiago before descending into the pretty town of Rua and the very last night of your pilgrimage!!  
 
Day 8
Rua to Santiago de Compostela (260m) 21kms
Ascend and descend into Lavacolla where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river before reaching Santiago. On reaching Monte del Gozo you will finally see your goal - the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago! Descend into this UNESCO World Heritage Site and soak up the architecture and wonderful atmosphere in this cultural and spiritual mecca.
