This route takes you along the beautiful Atlantic coastline of both northern Portugal and Galicia (Spain). Cross through several small towns rich in culture and full of the Camino spirit. Churches, monuments, and old crosses tell the history of this less trodden pilgrimage. Day 1
Arrive in Porto and be met by our guide who will drive you to your hotel, built in an 18th century palace right in the heart of the city. Explore this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city, with its granite buildings and cobbled narrow streets. Dine riverside on the mighty Douro. See Gaia, the centre of the port wine industry.
Day 2
Porto to Vila do Conde, 34km, +200m
Leave the city streets behind and follow the coastline on wooden boardwalks and pavements. Encounter wide sandy beaches and local fishermen at work. Reach the historical seaside town of Vila do Conde and your boutique hotel on the banks of the Rio Ave, just two minutes from the centre of town.
Day 3
Vila do Conde to Viana Do Castelo, 60km, +400m
It’s a mix of coastal and rural scenery today. Esposende, on the delta of the Cavado River is a great stop off point for a break. Cross the Limia River and feast your eyes on the jewel of the Costa Verde, Viana do Castelo. This beautiful town boasts a wonderful medieval centre filled with churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains, a delightful riverfront and lovely beaches. Take a cable car ride up the hill for fantastic views. Your hotel tonight is right beside the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 4
Viana Do Castelo to Baiona, 65km, +600m
Today is your last ride in Portugal. Continue along the coast towards Vila Praia de Ancora. Enjoy the Portuguese seaside villages along the way to Caminha, a lovely town at the mouth of the Minho River which creates the natural northern border with Spain. Cross over by ferry (cost not included – pay direct) and into Spain. Continue on to the fishing village of A Guarda then follow the Way through a rural and coastal landscape before cutting across the mountains to Baiona, and your accommodation - the Parador de Baiona - a wonderful mix between a medieval castle and a Galician stately home overlooking the ocean.
Day 5
Baiona to Pontevedra, 65km, +1000m
Leave Baiona and cycle through rural terrain and villages with a stint on a busier road to Vigo where you will skirt around the edge of the city. Head northeast and follow the line of the Ria de Vigo estuary with its mussel farms. A steep descent takes you into Rendola, and if you are an oyster fan stop off for a taste in the riverside town of Arcade. Tonight's accommodation is at Parador de Pontevedra, a 16th century Renaissance palace located in the historic heart of Pontevedra.
Day 6
Pontevedra to Padron, 48km, +800m
Cycle through the ancient streets of Pontevedra to start the journey to Padron Enjoy a relatively hill-free day in pleasant countryside. Bathe your feet in the hot spring in the centre of Caldas de Reis then climb gradually through a series of hamlets and woodlands, Ascend to the village of Santa Maria and make your way to the medieval town of Padron, believed to be the arrival point of the body of St James when it was bought to Santiago by ship. Stay tonight in a magnificent 16th century chateau.
Day 7
Padron to Santiago de Compostela, 30km,+600m
Your final day on your pilgrimage to Santiago! Cycle through a series of Galician hamlets and up to Milladoiro for your first glimpse of Santiago and the cathedral towers. And finally you're there, in the historic centre and the Plaza del Obradoiro, where all pilgrims converge. Soak up the architecture and wonderful atmosphere of this cultural and spiritual UNESCO World Heritage sire, Your accommodation is a former banking house and Jesuit residence, and is right in the old town, just 300m from the Cathedral.
Day 8
Arrangements end after breakfast.
We recommend you extend your stay for a night or 2 to explore Santiago. We can also arrange a day trip to Fisterre – the “end of the world”.
